How to Stay Committed When Motivation Fades
Share
Motivation will get you started, but discipline will carry you.
Let’s be real - starting a new fitness or wellness journey is exciting. You’re motivated, energized, and ready to change everything overnight. But that motivation? It fades. And when it does, you need a plan to keep going anyway.
Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been on this journey for a while, one of the biggest shifts you can make is this: stop relying on motivation to keep you consistent.
Motivation is fleeting, but non-negotiables create habits. When movement becomes part of your routine - something you do no matter what - it starts to feel as natural as brushing your teeth.
If you wait until you “feel like it,” you’ll find every reason to skip it:
- “I’m too tired”
- “I’ll go tomorrow”
- “I don’t have time today”
When you make your exercise a priority, especially on the tough day, you reinforce a mindset of follow-through - and that’s where the real transformation begins.
Get this: it only takes a handful of consistent days to start building a lasting habit. You’ll know it’s working when you miss a workout and feel off.
Try this:
- Choose your workout days in advance for the week (or two)
- Block time off in your calendar like any other appointment
- Treat this as a promise to yourself
Don’t be concerned if the times shift. When I was first starting out, my workout times were all over the place, early mornings, mid-afternoons and even late evenings. And that’s okay. Your “best” time will shift with your lifestyle - the key is to find what works for this week, not forever. Right now, I workout in the afternoons, even though that’s when the gym is the busiest. It’s not perfect, but it works. And that’s what matters.
Keep in mind, that the more you prepare for low-motivation days, the more successful you’ll be:
- Set out your clothes the night before
- Have your workout plan ready
- Challenge yourself to get it in
Remember, every time you show up for yourself, even when it’s hard, you’re building confidence. This discipline will build consistency and consistency will give results. So the next time motivation fades (because it will), remind yourself: You don’t have to feel like it - show up and show out.
Your future self will thank you!
